What Is It?

COVSG, also known as SARS-CoV-2 Spike Ab, Semi-Quant, S is a simple blood test used to identify an adaptive immune response (antibodies developed) to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. This immune response is indicative of a current or prior infection and/or vaccination. This test does provide a quantitative result (0 to 250 U/ml) of antibodies present but not definitively answer whether the present antibodies are from a current or past infection. This test will also detect antibodies against spike glycoprotein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) generated following vaccination to help gauge the levels of antibodies in your blood. SARS-CoV-2 antibodies are detectable in over 90% of patients after two weeks of symptom onset or vaccination. This test does not indicate a level or degree of immunity or protection from future infection.

Who Is It For?

The COVSQ test is useful for:

  • Individuals who wish to know if they have had COVID-19 in the past but were asymptomatic or were not tested at the time of active infection
  • Vaccinated individuals who wish to assess antibody levels after vaccination
  • Tracking community spread
  • Understanding how antibody levels may affect severity of future infections

Why Is It Important?

This test can indicate exposure to COVID-19. The detection of a presence of this adaptive immune response to COVID-19 can be used to inform care when examined within the context of medical history, symptoms present, possible exposures, and recent travel. This test is also beneficial for individuals wishing to quantify and understand their own potential immunity to COVID-19 after infection, vaccination, or after an asymptomatic infection.
