What Is It?
SLYME screening, also known as Lyme Ab Modified 2-Tier w/ Reflex, S is a simple blood test used to diagnose Lyme disease. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia mayonii, transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. This test screens for signs of infection in your blood.
Who Is It For?
Your doctor may order Lyme Ab Modified 2-Tier w/ Reflex if you have early symptoms of infection such as:
- Fever and/or chills
- Headache
- Fatigue and muscle aches
- A skin rash indicative of a tick bite with a red ring and a clear centre
Or later stage symptoms such as:
- Severe joint pain and inflammation
- Severe headache and/or neck stiffness
- Numbness, tingling, or shooting pains in the hands and/or feet
- Memory and sleep disorders
You may also be referred for testing if you are asymptomatic but have recently removed a tick from your body.
Why Is It Important?
Most cases of Lyme disease respond well to antibiotic treatment when diagnosed early. Late diagnosis may be more difficult to treat, but detection can inform treatment. When left untreated, Lyme disease can result in the spread of the infection leading to joint disorders including arthritis, cognitive impairments, and health problems with your heart and nervous system.
