Ichor Launches Cholesterol test
A Cholesterol test is used to evaluate cardiovascular risk by measuring the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood.
The test can help determine your risk of the buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) in your arteries that can lead to narrowed or blocked arteries throughout your body.
A desireable total cholesterol level is below 200 milligrams per decileter (mg/dL), whereas a high cholesterol level is anything above 240 mg/dL for adults 18 years of age or older.
Why should I get tested?
In a document published by Stats Canada in 2010 showed that 41% of adults in Canada had elevated cholesterol levels, increasing their risk of adverse heart events.
According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a peron's first cholesterol screening should occur between the ages of 9 and 11, and then be repeated every 5 years after that. The NHLBI also recommends screenings occur every 1 to 2 years for men ages 45 to 65 and women ages 55 to 65. People over 65 should receive cholesterol tests annually.
